Ultimate Road Trip to Journey - All the Dirt!!!

Up above, all the pictures from this past weekend with JACK’s Ultimate Road Trip to see Journey, Heart and Cheap Trick all performing at the White River Amphitheatre in Auburn Washington. Down below, all the video you could possibly wanna see (and then some).

Here’s how it all shook down…

Thursday as soon as we finished up the show we headed up to our rendezvous point to meet up with everybody. One by one everyone started showing up, introducing themselves and their guests and grabbing seats on the bus. From there, off to the ferry terminal and then across the border. Quick stop off to load up on some soda pops for the drive and then onto Auburn!! The drive down was a blast – we were cranking up the tunes, giving away a bunch of prizes with some crazy contests (check out video from the “Heart lipsync” contest down below, it’s gold!). We got in late Thursday afternoon and most everyone unpacked and then headed out for a bite to eat and a bunch of folks headed off to the nearby Muckleshoot casino.

Friday daytime was free time for everyone, so a lot of us slept in. Many people decided to go check out the nearby “Supermall” to drop some coin (lots of outlet stores). We all met back at the hotel to hop back onboard the JACK Party Bus at 6 o’clock to head off to the concert. And what a venue – if you’ve never been to a concert at one of these outdoor amphitheatres, it’s one of those things you need to put on your list of things to do before you die. We had some really amazing seats and the sound and acoustics were truly amazing.

First up to bat (right after we made a quick pit stop in the beer gardens) was Cheap Trick. Pretty decent, the lead singer can’t quite hold his notes or hit ‘em as high as back in the day, but still overall a good performance. Next up, Heart and holy crap can Ann Wilson still belt it out!! This woman sounds unfreakinbelieveable - doesn’t miss a note, high energy, everybody thought Heart totally knocked it outta the park. They did a cover of the Who’s “Reign Over Me” which we managed to snag on video and you can see down below – absolutely incredible. And that brings us to Journey. Their new lead singer is a guy from the Philippines by the name of Arnel Pineda who they found on youtube if you can believe it. You’d be hard pressed to find a guy that sounds more like the original lead singer Steve Perry (aside from Steve Perry himself). The whole band was tight, the energy was high and they just kept pumping out hit after hit after hit (with a few from the new album thrown in for good measure.)

After the show it was back to the hotel with a few after parties happening in rooms around the joint. Up early Saturday morning for the bus ride back. A quick stop at Krispy Kreme before we did some stocking up at duty-free, across the border, onto the 2 o’clock ferry and then back home shortly after 4 o’clock.

How do we even begin to thank all of the amazing people that were on the bus? Everybody always comes up afterwards and tells us how thankful they are to have been on the trip and we’re just happy cause we always seem to luck out and get such truly awesome people on these adventures. So to all of our fellow partiers this past weekend, thank you for making it another wicked good time, can’t wait for the next one: AC/DC November 28th in Vancouver and you can win your way onboard that bus starting on Wednesday!!!

Ultimate Road Trip to Journey - READ THIS NOW!!

Hey All;

We had a last minute cancellation for JACK’s Ultimate Road Trip to Journey, Heart and Cheap Trick!!! So someone else’s loss is gonna be your MAJOR gain.

Here’s how it’s gonna shake down: be listening to JACK at 3:20 this afternoon (Wednesday). When Vinnie says “Call now”, ring him up at 385-JACK and if you’re caller #20, you and a guest are onboard the bus, simple as that.

Two stipulations – you gotta be able to get into the States (the concert is in Auburn, just outside Seattle) and you gotta be ready to leave at 10am tomorrow morning (you’ll be back Saturday afternoon).

Yo!

Welcome to your Wednesday edition of the blog – Wednesday means it’s the big Free For All edition, so go nuts and talk about whatever you like. Need a thought starter? How about…

The alleged puppy killer has turned himself into police (that’s him up above on the left). His name is Cody Wellard and he’s claiming it was an “accident” when his gun went off and killed a puppy on Quadra Island at point blank range. Thoughts?

Rob Reid – owner of Frontrunners – has announced his candidacy for Mayor of Victoria. Big job, but we’ve known Rob for years and if anybody’s up to the task, it’s definitely him. You can check out Rob’s official site here.

Gas dropped to $1.399 yesterday. We’re happy, but not as happy as we’d be if we were paying what we should be, which is much closer to about $1/litre.

The United Way kicks off their annual campaign in Greater Victoria today with a big breakfast at the Royal B.C. Museum from 730 til 9am. We’re both honored to have been asked back to be part of this years effort and we’ll be heading out over the next couple months to speak to assorted businesses and organizations about the very important work the United Way does in this town.

And finally, we start making phone calls this morning to try and giveaway some trips for 2 to Mexico!! Make sure “JACK rocks!! Send me to Mexico!!” is how you answer the phone and make sure it’s on your out going voicemail too, cause it could find you jetting off to the Mayan Riviera this January!!

Dead Puppies

Yesterday on the show we got a phone call from Ed who shared a really sad story with us – his dog got hit by a truck on Saturday and the driver took off. Unfortunately, his dog died of it’s injuries. Then we flip open the paper this morning to read this story about a 21 year old man from Victoria who was hunting on Quadra Island with a buddy this past weekend and allegedly shot and killed a puppy at point blank range ON PURPOSE. Cops are investigating and have asked the man to turn himself in for questioning. Making this story even more sad? The puppy was gift to a 12 year old boy who was recovering from cancer.

Your thoughts, comments and suggestions are welcome. We’re reserving ours for the moment, what we wanna type right now would probably cost us our jobs.

Little late on the posting today, but we thought we’d share some pics from our JACK Coffee Break from earlier this morning. We stopped in at the Ministry of Children today – not really sure what exactly they do, we’re guessing it has something to do with kids though. Perhaps they sell them. It’s Friday and the sun is shining, plus Crash says it’s gonna be sunny all weekend and we’re gonna hit 27 by Sunday!! How crazy sweet is that?

Making news this morning…

Stop reading this blog and go get gas right now!! Gas shot up 13 cents a litre in Toronto and Ottawa yesterday and could do the same here in Victoria. Why the huge jump? Let’s just say we don’t like Ike. Or collusion.

If you’re an animal lover you won’t like this story about a German Shepherd found the other day near the Pat Bay Highway, very sad.

If you were at the Saanich Fair a few weeks ago, you mighta got scammed, read here to find out the latest.

Finally, some good news!! Victoria’s Stephanie Dixon bagged another medal at the Beijing Paralympics yesterday, this time a silver to add to the bronze she already got. Very cool.

Lots of stuff to keep you busy this weekend, including the annual Terry Fox Run on Sunday. We love this event and here’s why: you don’t have to run. You can walk it, bike it, rollerblade it, pogo-stick it, whatever you want – the whole idea is to just participate and raise money to fight cancer. Doesn’t get much simpler than that. There’s 3 different runs taking place around town on Sunday (in Victoria, Langford and Central Saanich), click here to find the closest one to you and what time it gets underway.

It’s back, your chance to tour the dump!! The third annual Hartland Happening, proudly supported by JACK!! Head out to the Hartland Landfill and see how they run things, take a tour, learn about stuff, take pictures of your kids playing on a 4 storey high pile of garbage!! (we’re joking btw). Apparently they’re giving away prizes too – one’s that don’t smell up your car on the drive home. So clearly they won’t be giving away Crash as a prize ;p

Also on this weekend, the Luxton Fall Fair – with a twist that is wicked awesome – the Redneck Games with events like “Bobbing For Pig's Feet”, the “Toilet Seat Toss”, and “Mud Pit Belly Flops”. We ain’t making any of this up. Lots of midway rides and other stuff too, all the info is right here.

After we wrap up our lame excuse for a radio program at 9 o’clock this morning, we’re off to do another JACK Coffee Break. Our memo from the promotions department says we’re going to a Government of Canada office to finish off Week One. Coffee Breaks and AC/DC

If you missed it on the show this morning, we were the first radio station in town to break the news that AC/DC is going on tour this fall with a show in Vancouver November 28th and one in Seattle the following night. None of our sources can confirm ticket info (how much $, when they’re on sale, etc) at this hour, but as soon as we know it, you will too. And, a little insider info for ya – we are putting the full court press on to get tickets for you to win. Soon as we can scoop the details, we shall.

Yesterday on the show we talked about the whole Terry Fox Run/Friends of Beacon Hill park controversy (you can read more about it here), curious to know if you’re in favor of the run or the park on this one.

7th Anniversary of 9/11

It’s the 7th anniversary of 9/11. Where were you when you heard the news and what were some of your first initial thoughts upon hearing about the planes hitting the World Trade Centre? Really beautiful song from the group “Live” up above it’s called “Overcome” and it uses footage from around New York the night of September 11th. Have a watch if you’ve got a second.

We went to the JACK premiere screening of “Burn After Reading” last night with George Clooney and Brad Pitt – very funny if you’ve got a slightly weird sense of humor.

Big thanks to the ladies at Megson Fitzpatrick Insurance at Town and Country Mall. We were there yesterday for another JACK Coffee Break with the Little Piggy. We’re off to Standard Life later this morning, still time to get us into your office, click here for the info.

First Coffee Break and 25 Funny Videos

That’d be the lovely Jenn in the pic with us up above (or, if you’re reading this on our Facebook page, that’s her with us in our profile picture). She works at Andrew Sheret out in Langford and was our first winner yesterday with the JACK Coffee Break. We stopped by the office yesterday morning, had some coffee and some treats from the Little Piggy to hand out to her and the rest of the crew, hung out for a bit, gave out some prizes, answered some phones and stole some office supplies. Batman, Elections and So Much More....

One of our favorite movies for the summer of ’08 would definitely be “Batman: The Dark Knight” – Heath Ledger is brilliant as The Joker. Check out the scene up above to see what we mean. JACK is proud to present Batman at the Imax premiering Friday September 19th and it is gonna be one helluva ride. Hit up the JACKaholics Club now to bag some free passes.

That’s a 15 year old girl by the name of Merzedese Ann Kirk and Shawnigan Lake R.C.M.P. are asking for your help locating her cause she hasn’t been seen since August 31st. She’s about 5’1” and weighs about 125lbs and you know there’s some very concerned family and friends that wanna make sure she’s okay, so if you see her, give the cops a shout.

Obama, Thank You and the Black Crowes

Up above, the next President of the United States. If you’re even slightly interested in American politics, you owe it to yourself to watch Barack Obama’s speech last night in front of 80,000 people in Denver where he formally accepted the nomination to be the Democrats pick for President. The entire speech is up above and it is one that will no doubt go down in history. And if you hate American politics, good news – it’ll all be over November 4th.

Wanna just say a real quick thank you again to everybody for your support of JACK’s 2nd annual Run For the Kids yesterday. Thanks to you, over $10,000 was raised for the new pediatric care area in the new E.R. that’s now under construction up at Vic General. The difference you will help to make in the lives of sick children here on the Island is nothing short of remarkable. And to those who yelled obscenities at our runners on the highway or who have angrily e-mailed us, please accept our apologies for inconveniencing you for a few minutes on your commute to work. It was never our intention to do so and we ask for your forgiveness and your understanding that what we did yesterday was motivated strictly by a desire to help sick children. And if you still don’t understand it at this point, you never will and we feel profoundly sorry for you and your inherent selfishness.

JACK's Run For the Kids is TODAY!!!

Well the big day has finally arrived – it’s JACK’s 2nd annual “Run For the Kids”. At around 7 o’clock this morning, Crash and about 30 other people are gonna be taking off from the parking lot of Thrifty Foods in Colwood. They are going to run down the Old Island Highway, hook into the #1, jog along into town and then take Blanshard all the way downtown to the JACK World Headquarters on Fort Street. And did we mention that they’ll all be running in hospital gowns? A 13km fun run and it’s all to raise money for the new pediatric care area of the new E.R. that’s currently under construction up at Victoria General Hospital.

Rumour has it they’ll be performing together this Thursday night in Denver at the stadium where Barack Obama will make his acceptance speech as the Democratic nominee for President. Scary story out of Denver this morning – two men were arrested who were planning to assassinate Obama during his acceptance speech. First question of the morning for you to contemplate: Is the United States ready for a black President and if so, will he live to see the end of his first term?

The number of deaths now being blamed on tainted meat from Maple Leaf foods is now up to 12. If you’re confused about what is and isn’t okay to eat, you’re not alone according to this story.

Closer to home, a dude living in the Highlands has been turned down in his bid to be able to keep a tiger (yes, you read that right) on his property. More on that here.

Last one for today – a big welcome home to all of our Island athletes who arrived back in Victoria from the 2008 Olympics yesterday afternoon (read more about it here). You have done this city, this Island and this country very proud and on behalf of all of us in Victoria: thank you for all your hard work in Beijing (regardless of whether you got a medal or not), and thank you as well for being outstanding role models and members of our community.

Greetings and Salutations…

All fueled up on an extra large double double from Tim Hortons this morning. We’ve got a crazy busy day ahead of us - a photographer from the Victoria News (the other paper in town that’s not the Times Colonist) is showing up to take a picture of us at 6am for an upcoming feature about what happens in the early hours in this town. At noon we’re rolling over to the United Way office for a meeting with those folks about helping them with the 2008 campaign this fall. And then tonight we’re escorting lucky JACK winner Steve Wilson and his guest to the Weird Al concert at the Royal Theatre (still some tickets available btw, click here for info). We’re all going backstage after the show, so we’ll get some pics and video up here tomorrow.

Prety much any magazine you can name is on this website – FOR FREE!!! No subscription required, nothing to download, just click and read. Everything from Time to Rolling Stone, the National Enquirer, Sports Illustrated, The Oprah Magazine (our newsdude Pat Thomas will lo-o-o-o-ve that one ;) and a whole bunch more. Amazing site, click here to check it out. One of the articles we stumbled across in the latest issue of Newsweek is called “What Bush Got Right” (as in George W.) Very interesting read.

Simon Scores Silver!!!

All the latest goings on in Beijing can be found up above. The big news? Victoria based Simon Whitfield who won silver in an unbelievable triathalon last night. If you missed the race, try and catch the news highlights sometime today, it was an amazing finish. Congratulations Simon – you’re not only a world class athlete but a great guy as well. (Have a read of Simon’s blog right here if you like)

One other piece of news to pass along this morning – if you were making plans to catch Dave Stewart (formerly of the Eurythmics) when he came to town September 9th, bad news – the show’s been cancelled due to “unforeseen circumstances”. Should be a busy weekend in Victoria, with the 14th Annual Telus Dragon Boat Festival on today through Sunday.

B.C. Ferries people say this weekend will be their busiest of the summer. They call this the "mid-August changeover", because most families take their vacations either the first two or the last two weeks of August, so there will be a lot of coming and going this weekend...be warned.

A.J. and his friends watched this go on back and forth for about 5 minutes. On a scale of gross/non-gross, we’re just wondering where “sharing an ice cream cone with your dog” rates for you. This could be fun.

Morning y’all, hope it was a good weekend for you. Too bad about the suck weather on Saturday. But despite the rain, Crash still managed hit Uplands for a little golf. A.J. had friends in from Pittsburgh - they had been planning to hit the fireworks out at Butchart Gardens but unfortunately the weather put the kibosh on that idea.

If you’re looking for something to do this week, here’s a couple of ideas for you: Tonight the Victoria Shamrocks play what could very well be their last game of the season. They dropped an 11-7 decision to the New West Salmonbellies the other night are now 3 games to zip in their first round playoff series. Game 4 hits Bear Mountain Arena at 7:45 tonight.

And Thursday night is another JACK Date Night with Empire Theatres. We’ll be at Empire University 4 for the 7 o’clock showing of “Mamma Mia” handing out some free stuff and cool prizes. The trailer for the movie is below – check it out and we’ll see you there!

We're Back From Holidays

We’re back from holidays. Lovely times had by all. Thanks Vinnie for getting up at Stupid O’clock every morning to helm the ship. Oh yes and A.J. went and got himself all married while we were away – you can congratulate him and send along your condolences to poor Holly as you see fit. They honeymooned in Hawaii – A.J. says Oahu sucks, but Kauai rocked his world. If you’re bored, have a click of the video below to see part of a helicopter he and the new Mrs. Cruze took.

So what’s going on in the world?

Bad news. You didn’t win the 43 million on 6-49 last night. Even worse news – neither did we. One person in Ontario and one person in Quebec (big surprise) are splitting the cash. If you have a ticket and haven’t checked it yet, here’s last night’s winning numbers.

The folks at P.ET.A. are pissing us off again today as they are now comparing you eating a hamburger to the murder and beheading of that 22 year old kid in Manitoba. We love animals just as much as the next person (especially marinated and grilled over an open flame), but this time those moronic clowns at P.E.T.A. have gone too far. Respecting another persons views on animals is one thing – but openly and graphically exploiting the senseless murder of a human being to further your zealous beliefs is a whole other thing entirely.

Matt called us up this morning and we talked to him on the air around 740. He’s a student at Royal Roads and last night he accidentally left his red Swiss Army backpack at the Tim Hortons across from the Casino on the Old Island Highway. It had his laptop, his textbooks and his wallet inside. So needless to say, the poor guy is absolutely freaked out – his entire life is essentially inside that backpack and he’s offering a reward for it’s return (along with the contents obviously). Holy crapsticks!! Gas slid down another 2 cents a litre in Victoria yesterday to $1.489!! How pathetic is it that we’re actually happy about this and that it made us wanna get out of our cars to dance a little jig with complete strangers at the gas station when we saw the drop last night? Gas retailers, remember our offer from yesterday – if you drop the price down to $1 a litre, we guarantee you every single person in this town will give you a hug the next time they come in to fill up.

Here’s the latest on the "Paul McCartney/Some Morons in Quebec Need To Shut The **** Up” situation.

Our good friends over at the Big Heart Rescue Society (they rescue and care for abused dogs) are holding a flea market of pet toys and pet supplies at the Ukrainian Cultural Center Saturday from 10am til 3pm. All the details and info are right here.

Pics up above (or over to the left if you’re reading this on our Facebook page) from our Backyard BBQ last night with lucky JACKaholic Kevin Orchard. He cashed in some points, we drew his name and he won dinner for a bunch of his family and friends courtesy of the Little Piggy on Fort Street. Man did they put on a good spread last night – burgers, salads, desserts, the whole shebang. Best part? They do all the cooking, all the serving and all the clean up - we just had to kick back, relax and eat. Big thanks to Patrick and Luis from Little Piggy for all their hard work. Got another BBQ to hit tonight (this radio thing is a tough job), we’ll have some pics from that one up on tomorrow’s blog.

Last item for today, gas actually went DOWN in Victoria yesterday by 2 cents a litre and there was much dancing in the streets because of it. Don’t you love how when oil goes up by $1 a barrel our gas goes up immediately by like 4 cents a litre, but when it drops by $10 a barrel (as it has in the last two days), we get a whopping 2 cent break. There’s something funny going on here people and it damn sure ain’t our morning show….

Gas and Live Concerts

Morning All;

Well if you thought you were getting gouged for gas in Victoria, there’s your proof positive in the pic up above. Not only are the oil companies making good coin off of you, so are your federal and provincial governments. We are now officially the 5th most expensive city in Canada in which to buy gas (out of 17 major cities surveyed). The first question this morning – how has the nearly 50% increase in fuel in the past 6 months affected you? Or are you one of those annoying “sunshine and lollipops” type of people who like to say “You should see what they pay in Europe!”? Hey Mary Poppins – people who say that make us wanna punch them in the face, just for the record.

Congrats to a couple of different people who are winners this morning thanks to being JACKaholics. First up, Shawn Carby who scored the Ultimate Home Theatre Fantasy picking up a 42” plasma screen t.v. along with a years worth of free movie rentals at Rogers Video. Very cool. Big congrats as well to Denise Chandler and Kevin Orchard too – we drew both of their names from the big pile of entries for the Backyard BBQ’s with Little Piggy Catering on Fort Street. Some good news this morning for the loved ones of the young model from Saltspring Island who was recently murdered over in China – an arrest has been made in the case.

In sports, FINALLY some good news for Canuck Nation as the Nux have mananged to sign free agent Pavol Demitra from Minnesota.

The Langford Summer Festival is on this weekend. The parade stats at 10am Saturday morning – watch for the JACK Prize Pig and a bonus code worth 500 points!

Ska Fest is also on this weekend.

Canada Day Police Searches

Hey All;

This showed up in our e-mail yesterday regarding our comments on the show about the police confiscating booze on busses on Canada Day. A woman in Sooke has filed a complaint with the B.C. Civil Liberties Association and we said we thought the cops were justified in doing what they did in the interest of the safety of the general public. At least one person disagrees with us....

I was listening to you guys this morning Wednesday July 9th, 2008. I wanted to ask if you guys were serious that you agreed with the police involvement with going onto busses and randomly searching people and pouring out their liquor on Canada Day? How can anyone in a free society go along with that? You automatically assumed that everyone on the bus was heading to the Canada Day celebrations. What about those that do not celebrate Canada Day? You just discriminated against them and so did the police. I am sure if you asked most of the officers, off the record, that they would appose that action that they did. What about Americans that were visiting our beautiful city? Do you think that they care if it is Canada Day or not? Maybe they were on their way to their hotel with their sealed alcohol and the police came on and took it and poured it out…Welcome to Canada. Maybe you should phone the tourist board and tell them that you are all for the way tourists are treated by the police during our holiday…maybe they weren’t on the bus but maybe they were (I am sure that will increase your popularity). Do you think that if you continue to praise police actions that the next time you are caught speeding they will give you a break because you are pro police…not!

What they did was completely insane and way overboard. Why not put up barriers, and create a containment and if you come into that area then you are subject to a search?

Your comments (even though you are free to make them) are, in my opinion, completely unacceptable in today’s world.

Let’s see, the police have done other things like this in the past; Police bring a drug sniffing dog on board the BC Ferries to randomly search vehicles for contraband…Courts said that was illegal; Police bring drug dogs to schools to randomly search students and their lockers…courts rule…illegal. Hmmm, do I see a pattern here? Police randomly search and seize alcohol from people on city busses…court rules…well I guess we will see.

Just my 2 cents, but I was disappointed with what I heard from you today.

Morning Y’all!!

Hope your Monday is going better than ours. Our day hasn’t even really begun yet and we just remembered we have a staff meeting at noon. We try like hell to deke out of these things cause A) we’ve been up since 3am – by the time noon rolls around we should be napping. B) our staff meetings are crazy boring. If the Big Boss Man would liven it up with some rooster fights or clowns, we’d be all bells and whistles.

Anyhow, enough complaining (we’ll save that for on the air). First matter of business, big mega thanks to our buddy Jeff Harris over at Save On Memorial Centre for spiffing us up with tickets for the Kid Rock show the other night. If you were there, let’s hear your thoughts. If you weren’t, suffice to say you missed a damn good show. Speaking of concerts, we’ve got Blue Rodeo tickets and Judas Priests tickets for you to win this morning (and every morning this week -we’re assuming here, we never read the memo’s). The Blue Rodeo show is over in Van on August 23rd, the Priest show is here in Vic on the 23rd of this month.

But the street population and the high cost of living ranked at the top of the list of things we don’t like about our city. Whoops, forgot to post this before we took off after the show today.

We’re officially on holidays as of right now, gonna take some time and recharge the batteries. This is the first real time off we’ve had since Christmas, so we’re looking forward to getting a chance to sleep in for a few days.

Whole Lot Going On

Up above, a very low quality picture of A.J. with CHEK News reporter girl Dana Hutchings at the JACK premiere of “Get Smart” last night. She’s a sweetheart, but since she still hasn’t added us as a friend on Facebook, but Gordie Tupper has, he still wins our hearts as our favorite Victoria t.v. celebrity. ;) If you were at the premiere last night, let’s hear what you thought of the movie.

Meantime, since we’re at work this morning, you can probably guess we didn’t win the 22 million with Lotto 6-49 last night. The jackpot hits 27 mil this Saturday – hypothetical question: you win all 27 mil, what do you do with the cash?

For those of you keeping count, there’s now been SIX human feet wash up on the shores of B.C. in the past year (the latest one was yesterday in Campbell River). Let’s hear your theory as to where they’re coming from.

You ground your child for misbehaving. Your child sues you. The court SIDES WITH YOUR KID and overturns the grounding. Only in Canada (click here to read more).

Speaking of the courts and kids, did you know the government is trying to pass a law that could see you charged with assault if you spank your child? Let’s get your two cents on that one.

For the three of you left in the world who are still stupid enough to believe that the U.S. invasion of Iraq was anything but a war for oil, this article will open your eyes.

Big surprise – a majority of us in this province oppose the carbon tax which is being tacked on to our gas in less than 2 weeks.

One last one (and it has to do with the high cost of fuel as well, go figure) – it looks like riding B.C. Ferries is about to get more expensive too.

Back From Seattle

Up above, pics from our Ultimate Boys Road Trip to Seattle this past weekend (you can see even more on our Facebook page). Big huge mega thanks to our wicked awesome Dads: Dale, Brent, Blair and Mike. We hit the Mariners/Nationals game Friday night which was looking like a Washington blowout after 2 innings, but actually ended up being a pretty good game. Saturday it was off to do some golfing at Druids Glen and then out for dinner and bevies Saturday night. We rolled back yesterday afternoon so the fellas could get in some quality time with the kids for Fathers Day and now here we are back at it for another week.

Not a lot going on in Victoria so far this morning, so let’s hear how your weekend was – did you get up to anything for Dads Day? Hey, here’s a thought starter: the best and/or worst advice the old man ever gave you growing up.

A Whole Lotta Stuffs

Good Morning;

It’s the last day for our Ultimate Boys Road Trip to Seattle contest, we’ll play again at 7:40 this morning if you’re a Dad who wants to get out of here with us and the other 3 dudes that have already won their way onboard the L.A. Limo Party Bus. And speaking of contests, we’ve got more Monster Truck tickets and the Wheel of Meat with Thrifty Foods on the show today as well.

The biggest story in the news right now – the federal government yesterday formally and finally officially apologized to the Aboriginal people of this country for decades and decades of abuse they suffered after being forced into residential schools. Read this article to learn a bit more and you’ll get a much better understanding of why this is such a big deal. The question now – does it change anything from here on for the First Nations people of this country?

Oh look – a story about a kid being mauled by rottweilers. We would do our usual “ban ‘em, along with pit bulls” song and dance routine but it’ll just go the same way it did every other time this has happened in the past. But if you’ve got something to say on the story, please feel free to add your two cents.

Yes, the weather this Juneuary has sucked for all of us. But if you’re a fan of the “hippy lettuce”, it’s got even bigger repercussions.

And our last one for today – thank you Trevor Linden for everything you gave us Canucks fans for many years. You sir are not only a great hockey player, you’re a great man and a class act all the way.

Friday nights festivities and had a great time. Then on Saturday night we rolled over to the Delta to host the Big Heart Rescue Society’s 3rd annual Spring Gala. It was a very busy weekend and an honor to be a small part of two very worthwhile causes.

The big one – gas prices went up 3 cents a litre in Victoria yesterday. But good news – your federal government is coming to the rescue!! By holding a special parliamentary committee that is going to look into the high cost of gasoline. Excuse us while we hold our breath waiting for the results.

CBC is ditching the Hockey Night in Canada theme? Are you people insane?!?!?!?

And finally, Victoria city councilor Dean Fortin has thrown his hat in the ring to be the new Mayor of Victoria. (Alan Lowe is not running for re-election). We hereby endorse Dean to be the new Mayor. Mind you, at this point he’s the only declared candidate, so our endorsement ain’t really all that hard to come by. So far Dean hasn’t done anything to win our love, so if any other contenders come to the table with something/anything for us (free pizza, a bag of hockey pucks, maybe a 2 for 1 Whopper coupon), we’ll happily switch our allegiance over to you.

People know it's usually bad form to swear at work. Now there's another reason to make sure that bad language doesn't creep into your vocabulary when you're at your desk or on the shop floor: It can get you fired. TheLadders.com, an online job search site for six-figure jobs, surveyed 2,520 executives and found that foul language is the worst breach of all office manners. Thirty-eight percent of the managers who have fired employees for violating office etiquette cited cursing as the reason for the termination. On the firing scale, cursing ranks even higher than drinking on the job (35 percent) and making an excessive number of personal calls (28 percent).

... Co-workers, however, are a little more forgiving than bosses. While 81 percent dislike the sounds of swearing coming from the neighboring cubicle, it's not as bad as the worst workplace offense noted by 98 percent: stealing food from the office refrigerator.

Holy crap – no Crash today (he’s a little under the weather), so I’m rolling on my own this morning and WAY behind in my work.

The headline blazing across the front page of this mornings edition of the Times Colonist says it all: Kelly Ellard seeks FOURTH murder trial. Why do we live in a society that allows this? Reena Virk’s father said it best on the news last night: In Canada, we have a legal system, but we certainly don’t have a justice system.

It’s a National Day of Action as First Nations try to bring some of their bigger issues into the spotlight across the country.

Looks like Pittsburgh is finally going to make this a Stanley Cup final worth watching (video highlights from last nights game here if you missed the game).

And for those of you who are tired of all the “green this” and “environmental that”, we give you: Carbon Belch Day on June 12th – a day where you are encouraged to leave as big of a carbon footprint on this planet as possible. Those of you choking on your organic granola as you read that last sentence may want to skip the article ;)

Hello AJ & Crash,

I am not sure how to do this as I haven't undertaken anything like this before. I was extremely upset when I watched the live news coverage yesterday morning of the RCMP in Maple Ridge deliberately running over a "Perp" and then saying he has only minor injuries and the police did an excellent job of protecting the public. Was no one else upset by the fact that the police SUV was deliberately used to run down an unarmed man? When watching the coverage at 11:00pm they cut the video just before they ran over the man and then cut to him lying on the side of the road being examined. Officers walked the "suspect" to the ambulance in place of the ambulance crew, without the aid of a back board or even a stretcher. The man had been hit by a 3 ton vehicle at more than a rolling pace, bounced off the windshield and rolled off the hood. If I was a lawyer, I would say the disturbed gentleman has a good case for extreme force. Are we in a police state? That is how it appears. They authorities can do whatever they wish and justify their actions to the tax paying public.

Wake up!

Well, let’s see – this is normally the part where we do the Facebook shout outs to our new FB buddies. Hope you had a great weekend – the weather didn’t actually turn out too bad at all (as opposed to the suckfest of weather this morning), we’d love to hear what you got up to over the weekend. We’d also love to hear your thoughts on…

A bear that was spotted yesterday in the Brentwood Bay area – add this in with the bear spotted off Happy Valley Road along with another one off of West Saanich Road last week and we got to wondering: have you ever spotted a bear in the general Victoria area before?

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull did some big box office over the weekend, anybody here check it out? (A.J. finally had a chance to see Iron Man, LOVED it!)

Is it worth 420 million dollars to land a spacecraft on Mars to search for signs of life? Is the exploration of space in general a feasible one?

Scott Dixon took the Indy 500 yesterday, anybody catch the action? And Detroit hopes to ride their Game 1 win when they face off against Pittsburgh tonight at 5 on CBC, let’s hear some predictions.

Anyways, thank you to Tara, Diana, Dawn, Stephen, Don, Tanis, Evelyn, Juanita, Michelle, Judy, Sharon and Dan (happy birthday today buddy) for adding us as friends on Facebook (click our Facebook picture just over to your left to do the same). We’ve been stalking ex’s and former classmates for the better part of an hour now, this Facebook thing is actually kinda cool ;)

We’ve got Cirque du Soleil tickets to win at 8:20 this morning when we play “Know Your Son/Sun” for the show coming up May 31’st at Save On.

Our buddies over at Saanich Police gave us a call the other day – normally when that number comes up on the call display we just figure it’s another one of those bogus paternity lawsuits again, so we let it go to voicemail. But this time they were calling to see if we could throw out a mention about their “Conversations” forums. The whole idea behind these is to sit down and have a heart to heart with your teenager about driving dangerously or impaired. You can sit and talk to them about it yourself, but if you wanna give it some SERIOUS impact, take them out to one of these “Conversations” forums – cause that’s where emergency workers and people who have been tragically impacted by this issue are gonna paint the picture real clear for them.

The forum goes tonight (Thursday) at Reynolds Secondary from 630-9pm – it’s totally free and open to anybody in the C.R.D., regardless of where you live or where your kid goes to school. Give it some thought and then head over to the Saanich Police website for more info and to let ‘em know you’re coming. It may be one of the single most important talks you ever have with your kid.

Hey guys: I had an interesting experience a week ago! I pulledinto the A&W on Douglas St. with a serious craving for a teeburger and onion rings. Plus, I was starving and they were the closest place available at the time. I ordered and went to the window for pickup. I handed them US dollars to pay for my burger and they refused the money saying "we can't take US money". I said you're joking - right? They weren't joking, an executive meeting took place to see if they could take the currency and I drove away shaking my head.

Just wondering if you wanted to take a look into it and see what's up with that - especially given that we are in our tourist season.

Yes, it’s true: we’ve officially joined up on Facebook. We’re kind of mixed emotions on this one – on the one hand we think maybe the whole Facebook thing has come and gone, had it’s day and we’ve already missed the boat (story of our lives). But on the other hand, we’re always looking for ways to stay in touch with the people who listen to JACK and to our humble little radio program. On any given day we ask you to call us on the JACK line (385-JACK) or e-mail us or leave a comment here on the blog. So now signing up with Facebook is just one more extension of that. Perhaps when six months has gone by and nobody has signed up to be our friend, we’ll re-think the whole thing. Until then though, if you’re on Facebook and you wanna be pals, please feel free to add us as a friend.

Hope you had a great long weekend, we both did (til the weather went to crap yesterday). Crash headed up Island for a couple of days to visit with his brother Dave. A.J. and the Future Mrs. drove all over Victoria looking for a quiet, intimate beach to get married on later this summer (if you’ve got any suggestions, feel free to post ‘em or e-mail ‘em). Remember the good old days when you could record your favorite songs onto a cassette tape either off the radio or off another tape? You’d spend hours putting together that perfect mix of songs and then pop the tape in your Walkman or into your ghetto blaster. It’s a lost art form that’s now returned thanks to a new website we stumbled across this morning called “Mixwit”. We’ve made up a mixtape of 20 songs we're really digging right now and if you wanna e-mail us a list of your favorite 10-20 songs, we’ll do up your mixtape and feature it on the blog for everybody else to check out.

With the rising demand for oil, the rising price of fuel and our concern for the environment, I am surprised that we still let sporting events that use motor vehicles of any kind to happen. Municipalities are taking the right step with the no idling bylaw, so lets take it one step further and ban any kind of motorsport in the Capital Regional District to lower our emissions and teach others to use fuel responsibly.

Hi guys,

I heard you the other morning talking about the pit bull that attacked Sean Bajwa. Everytime something like this happens the debate rages over breeds, owners, training, kill the dog, don't kill the dog, etc, but nothing ever changes. Why is that?

In part it is because dog owners are not held responsible for the actions of their animals. There is a provincial law in BC that gives dogs, and owners, the benefit of the doubt - the 'one bite rule'. If someone is seriously injured by a dog they have no legal recourse to get compensation unless they can prove that the dog has bitten someone before. This law needs to be changed, victims should have the right to sue owners, owners need to be held responsible.

The UBCM endorsed a resolution last year to petition the provincial government to change the current law (three other provinces have already done so): B91-VICTIMS OF DOG ATTACKS - RIGHT TO RECOVER CIVIL DAMAGES

It’s official: the weather sucked royally last month.

And the Salmon Kings had their worst meltdown of the season last night, blowing a 5-1 lead and losing to the Utah Grizzlies –7-5. Unbelievable.

Kid Rock is coming to town July 5th, tickets are on sale at noon today.

Judas Priest hits Victoria July 23, tickets for that one are also on sale today but at 10am.

Hot’n’heavy concert rumours: Black Crowes at the Royal Theatre in early September and Kenny Rogers at Save On in the middle of November. We’ll keep you posted on both.

[1] If your relationship is sinking -- abandon ship! You often want to fix a relationship long after its expiration date. Or you specifically pick a guy who you think is a “fixer-upper” and try to change him or fix him. Guys, on the other hand, will do a swift, unemotional cost-benefit analysis and hit the road if things aren’t going well. Just because you’re a great woman, and he’s a great man -- that doesn’t mean you’re each other’s great match.

[2] You don’t need to talk everything to death. Those long, weighty relationship talks on Grey’s Anatomy are one reason the show is watched by 3 billion women and 3 men. The truth is all of the energy gets depleted from your relationship when you have the 73rd conversation about why you feel hurt when he doesn’t return your text messages right away. Save your energy for what really matters. If it’s not a “deal-breaker” don’t make it one.

[3] Sometimes it’s fine to be silent. Everyone dreads those conversational voids that can happen during the first few dates. You’re both looking around the room, desperate for a topic once the introductory chit chat has run out. You feel the urge to say something - ANYTHING! Plus, if you don’t stop talking long enough to listen, you’re never going to get the chance to know him. So smile - and learn to enjoy the occasional silence.

Couple of things making some big headlines this morning and we’d like to hear what YOU have to say on ‘em both.

By now you’ve no doubt heard the story of the man in Austria who kidnapped his own daughter, then kept her hidden away where he raped her continuously for the past 24 years (even fathering an apparent 7 children with her). You can get the latest on this very sad story here and then tell us what you think.

And the new issue of Maclean’s magazine has an interview with Felicia Simms – she’s the mother of the conjoined twin girls in Vernon who are now 18 months old. Well she’s due to give birth any day now – to what will be her FIFTH child. And did we mention she’s only 22? We’re of two VERY different minds on this one: Crash says he thinks if she can handle 4, then what’s the big deal with having one more? A.J. is a little stronger in his opinion – not only does he think this girl needs to stop having sex altogether, he says she is “irresponsible and selfish” to be having another child when she already has 4 others – 2 of which ARE CONJOINED AT THE HEAD!!! Your two cents?

Meantime, the T.C. 10k is wrapped for another year and while we’re all a little bit sore around the JACK world headquarters today, we’re feeling pretty good about hitting the pavement yesterday morning with more than 10,000 other people. It’s an honor to be one of the major sponsors of the T.C. 10k and our hats are off this morning to salute all the organizers, all the volunteers, all the people who line the streets to cheer on the participants and of course the runners and walkers themselves. If you’ve never done the T.C. 10k before, make the goal now to be a part of the fun next year in some way shape or form, it’s an experience you will never, ever forget.

The T.C. 10K (proudly presented by JACK) is this Sunday. And while Crash smokes across the finish line in another personal best time, A.J. will try simply not to die. A grand total of 5 very short practice runs in the past 3 months have left A.J. woefully underprepared for the task ahead. But after being informed that Vinnie was still steaming ahead with his plan to run, A.J. made the decision that the only thing worse than great personal pain would be the relentless taunting he would suffer around the JACK World Headquarters if he failed to “man up” (in Crashs’ words) and just do it. So if you’re running on Sunday and you see a guy keeled over at the 3km mark looking like he wants to die, please call a volunteer over to help the dude out. Thanks in advance.

If you want a very good argument why these sewage treatment plants are a GIGANTIC WASTE OF TAXPAYER MONEY, read this article.

The sewage treatment debate is one that is far too important to be based on the emotions of well intentioned but sorely misinformed "environmentalists" – it needs to be based on science and facts – two things that have been sorely lacking in this debate.

Equally important moral and ethical debate: would you eat meat that’s not from an animal but that was created in a laboratory? Yeccchhhh!!

Check out the video up above – it’s time lapsed video footage of a dude trapped in an elevator for 41 HOURS!!! Found that one on youtube this morning - then we read a story about a woman who is afraid of (get ready for it): buttons. Swear to God it’s true – here’s the story….

Gillian Linkins suffers one of the world’s most bizarre phobias -- a fear of buttons. The 22-year-old England woman can’t even stand to be in the same room as friends and family who wear them. She first realized her fear aged seven, when she refused to put on her school blouse. The sight of buttons sends Gillian into panic attacks and her boyfriend can only wear clothes with zippers. Gillian says, "For me touching a button would be like touching a cockroach. It feels dirty, nasty and wrong." Gillian’s not alone. Her phobia -- officially named Koumpounophobia -- affects one in 75,000 people around the world.

So the topic of “phobias” came to mind. Crash hates snakes and it was only a few years ago that A.J. got over a bad case of “commitment-phobia” (thanks to Holly). But we wanna hear about YOUR fears and phobias (or ones you’ve heard about other people having).

It’s Earth Day and we’ve got a video up above for all the doom and gloomers who keep incessantly screaming that the sky is falling and the end is near because you failed to recycle that mayonnaise jar last week.

You know, some people (okay, many people) have accused us of being far too cavalier in our attitude towards the environmental movement. Forgive us, but where some see a “movement of consciousness”, we see lemmings all lining up to leap blindly off the cliff. It’s not that we don’t believe we have a responsibility to try and keep this planet clean and that we can each do our part, but when it starts to affect people’s overall sensibilities (not to mention their incomes), that’s where the red flags start popping up for us.

Questions to ponder today…

Should we – as broadcasters on the public airwaves – follow along blindly and warn you ala Al Gore of the impending doom that lurks around the corner? Should we keep calling out the people and over zealous mentality that seems to be gripping the world right now? Or should we try to find some kind of happy kumbuya type middle ground?

One more – what do you do (if anything) to help the planet? Any suggestions or tips on how to make this place a little bit greener?

Native leaders are talking about possible protests at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

The automakers of Canada want the feds to hike the price of gas in order to cut auto emissions. Yes, because having the automakers make more fuel efficient vehicles would be too giant a leap of logic now wouldn’t it?.

In Austria they’re talking about banning cellphones on public transit. Where would you like to see cellphones baned from in Victoria?

And one last one to ponder – U.F.C. 83 is in Montreal tomorrow night. If anybody wants to take a stab at explaining the appeal of Ultimate Fighting to us, please feel free.

T.C. 10k In 10 Days

Hey, it’s A.J. writing this morning and I’m in a conundrum today and looking for some feedback, so I thought where better to turn than the blog to see what you guys have to say. Quite simply, here’s what it all boils down to….

I’m supposed to be running in the T.C. 10k on the 27th. The problem? I am no where near prepared. Training for a run like this if you’re a novice runner takes months so that you do it properly to minimize your chances of injury and maximize your chances of success. I’ve run maybe 3 times in the past 3 months. I tell people I’m too busy to run, but the truth of the matter is that I hate running. Absolutely loathe it. Exercise isn’t an enjoyment of mine in general, so running falls pretty far down on my priority list. My belief is that one should only run if one is being chased by a shotgun wielding husband ;)

I’ve run the T.C. 10k the past two years, but this year I just haven’t been into it. The problem is that I have co-workers here at JACK who are doing the run and I’m getting called out for recently saying on air that I’m thinking about ditching this year.

So I need your thoughts: Do I “man up” and try and train like hell for the next 10 days and just go for it on the 27th? Or do I slink away with my tail between my legs and just deal with the scorn that follows? Your opinions and last minute training tips are welcome. Oh yeah and one more thing - they're looking for volunteers to help out on Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th at Pearkes Arena to help out people who are picking up their race packages. Our hats are off this morning to the hard working board of directors over at B.C. Ferries who recently voted themselves a 60% pay increase – which took effect the same day ferry fares went up 7.3%. That takes cajones.

Gas is up in Victoria again this morning. Wheeeee!!!

Have you heard about the B.C. couple (both 47) who are trying to conceive so they can use the baby’s stem cells to try and save their 8 year old son who has leukemia? This one could blow up big time.

Transit cops at Skytrain on the mainland are TASERING people who don’t pay to ride. Shocking. (sorry, had to ;)

We’re back from Jamaica! Back from the beautiful sunny warm Sandals Grande Ocho Rios with it’s unbelievably friendly staff. Huge thank-yous to all of our contest winners we took down with us, including Konrad and Kristi, Dan and Leah, Rick and Mary-Ann and Etienne and Elisa – we couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to hang out and party with for a week in paradise. Mega ginormous thanks as well to Lindsay and Ian in the P.R. department at the resort for taking such good care of us every morning that we did the show at Sandals last week. People ask us all the time “Do you love your job with all the fun stuff you get to do and places you get to visit?” And the answer is all a resounding “Yes, very much.” We’ll have plenty of pics and vids from Jamaica to share with you in the next 24 hours.

But as much as we love traveling and going on those amazing trips, it’s always good to come home to Victoria. It’s nice to be back in the city we love and apparently we’ve got plenty to talk about on the show this morning, including…

Our thoughts and best wishes are with the crews aboard the Ottawa, the Regina, the Calgary and the Protecteur as they sailed out of CFB Esquimalt yesterday on missions around the world. Be safe and get home soon.

And if anybody’s “birthing a baby” story can top the lady who gave birth in a car that was racing down a freeway in Vancouver, we’d love to hear it.
